Rate This Guy: Cam Newton

Today we take a look at Carolina rookie QB Cam Newton and develop an accurate Madden Rating for him. As always we rate a player's production looking at the most recent 3-year window with emphasis on the most recent year.

Many people will probably disagree with the way we rate rookies, but first and foremost we value Accuracy in our ratings. We have a baseline where we group players together by their draft position and from there we allow their ratings to be determined by their play. Historically rookies are not dependable or consistent and to overrate them for the sake of hype or what they may have done at the combine or in college simply doesn't make sense. The NFL isn't either of these, and based on this we'll wait until these players perform on the NFL stage before they're rewarded. Its not hard in the least to still give these players the strengths that they've already displayed while rating them in the range designated by their draft position. Most importantly, there's no hard and fast rule that says that a guy will excel or pan out. Every year "can't miss" prospects struggle and enter the bust category. Only time will tell what rookies will be successes and which will be disappointments. Based on this, we gave Cam Newton the same rating we gave everyone in the first round of the 2011 Draft. 60.
